Schwa /ə/: အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာအတွက် အများဆုံးအသံ
“about”, “banana”, “the” တို့ထဲမှာရှိတဲ့ အနားယူတဲ့ အသံက အရမ်းတွေ့ရတယ်။ ဒါကို သင်ယူရင် သင့်အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားဟာ တစ်ချက်တည်း သဘာဝလိုဖြစ်လာမယ်။

Here is a fact that surprises most learners: the most frequent vowel in English has no letter of its own. It is the schwa, written /ə/, and you hear it in about, banana, problem, sister and in the word the itself.
Schwa အသံက ဘယ်လိုလဲ
Open your mouth a little, relax everything — lips, tongue, jaw — and make a short, neutral “uh”. That is it. No smile, no rounding, no effort.
The schwa is the sound of an unstressed syllable. English stresses one syllable of a word and lets the others go soft and quick:
| စကားလုံး | စာလုံးပုံစံအရ | အရိုးအမြန်စကားပြော |
|---|---|---|
| banana | ba-na-na | b/ə/-NA-n/ə/ |
| problem | pro-blem | PRO-bl/ə/m |
| today | to-day | t/ə/-DAY |
| teacher | tea-cher | TEA-ch/ə/ |
ဘာကြောင့် အရေးကြီးသလဲ
If you pronounce every vowel fully — “ba-na-na” with three clear “a” sounds — every syllable gets the same weight. The words are correct, but the rhythm is foreign, and rhythm is what native ears notice first.
Learners often sound “accented” not because of a hard consonant, but because they never reduce anything.
သေးငယ်တဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေ၊ ကြီးမားတဲ့ အကျိုးသက်ရောက်မှု
The schwa lives in the tiny words that hold sentences together. In normal speech they are almost swallowed:
- a cup of tea → a cup
/əv/tea (တစ်ခွက် လက်ဖက်ရည်) - I can do it → I
/kən/do it (ကျွန်တော် can လုပ်နိုင်တယ်) - bread and butter → bread
/ən/butter (ပေါင်မုန့် နှင့် အုန်းဆီ) - to the shop →
/tə/the shop (ဆိုင်သို့)
Say them fully and you sound careful. Say them with a schwa and you sound fluent.
လေ့ကျင့်နည်း
- Pick a sentence and underline the stressed syllables.
- Say only those loudly and clearly.
- Let everything else collapse into short, relaxed
/ə/sounds.
I want a cup of tea and a piece of cake. (ကျွန်တော် တစ်ခွက် လက်ဖက်ရည်နှင့် မုန့်တစ်ချပ် လိုချင်တယ်)
In HolosAccent you hear every phrase from a native US or UK voice before you record, then your take is compared with it sound by sound — weak vowels included — and you can replay yours right next to the reference to hear where the rhythm differs.
