Learners often pronounce every -ed ending as a full extra syllable: “work-ed”, “play-ed”, “jump-ed”. Native speakers almost never do. In fact, most -ed endings add no syllable at all.
There are three ways to say -ed, and the rule depends only on the last sound of the verb.
- -ed ကိုပြောဆိုရန် နည်းလမ်းသုံးခုရှိပြီး၊ စည်းမျဉ်းသည် အကြောင်းအရာတစ်ခုတည်းဖြစ်သော verb ၏ နောက်ဆုံးအသံ အပေါ်သာ အခြေခံသည်။
Rule 1 — /ɪd/: /t/ သို့မဟုတ် /d/ အပြီး
When the verb already ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound, you need an extra syllable, otherwise you could not hear the ending:
- want → wanted
/ɪd/(အဆုံးသတ်သံ /ɪd/) - need → needed
/ɪd/(အဆုံးသတ်သံ /ɪd/) - decide → decided
/ɪd/(အဆုံးသတ်သံ /ɪd/)
This is the only case where -ed is a separate syllable.
ဤသည် -ed ကို သီးသန့်သံလုံးအဖြစ် ထည့်သွင်းသည့် တစ်ခုတည်းသော အခြေအနေဖြစ်သည်။
Rule 2 — /t/: အသံမထွက်သော အသံများအပြီး
After a voiceless sound (/p/, /k/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /f/, /θ/) the ending is a short, quiet /t:
- work → worked
/wɜːkt/(သံလုံး /t/ အဖြစ်) - stop → stopped
/stɒpt/(သံလုံး /t/ အဖြစ်) - watch → watched
/wɒtʃt/(သံလုံး /t/ အဖြစ်) - laugh → laughed
/lɑːft/(သံလုံး /t/ အဖြစ်)
Rule 3 — /d/: အခြားအရာများအပြီး
After vowels and voiced sounds the ending is a soft /d:
- play → played
/pleɪd/(သံလုံး /d/ အဖြစ်) - live → lived
/lɪvd/(သံလုံး /d/ အဖြစ်) - call → called
/kɔːld/(သံလုံး /d/ အဖြစ်)
Quick check: put your hand on your throat and say the last sound of the verb. Buzz → /d/. No buzz → /t/. A /t/ or /d/ already there → /ɪd/.
အမြန်စစ်ဆေးရန်: လည်ပင်းပေါ်တွင် လက်ကိုင်ပြီး verb ၏ နောက်ဆုံးအသံကို ပြောပါ။ Buzz → /d/. Buzz မရှိပါက → /t/. /t/ သို့မဟုတ် /d/ အရင်ကရှိနေပါက → /ɪd/.
Practise with a mini story
I walked home, opened the door, and wanted to sleep. Then I remembered I needed to cook. I washed some rice and called my friend.
Count the syllables as you read. Walked and washed are one syllable each; only wanted and needed grow.
ဖတ်နေစဉ် သံလုံးများကို အရေအတွက်တွက်ပါ။ Walked နှင့် washed တစ်သံလုံးစီဖြစ်ပြီး၊ wanted နှင့် needed သာ သံလုံးတိုးလာသည်။
