Learners often pronounce every -ed ending as a full extra syllable: “work-ed”, “play-ed”, “jump-ed”. Native speakers almost never do. In fact, most -ed endings add no syllable at all.

सिक्नेहरूले अक्सर हरेक -ed अन्त्यलाई पूर्ण अतिरिक्त अक्षर जस्तै उच्चारण गर्छन्: “work-ed”, “play-ed”, “jump-ed”। मूल वक्ताहरूले प्रायः यसो गर्दैनन्। वास्तवमा, धेरैजसो -ed अन्त्यहरूले कुनै अक्षर पनि थप्दैनन्।

There are three ways to say -ed, and the rule depends only on the last sound of the verb.

-ed लाई भन्नका तीन तरिकाहरू छन्, र नियम केवल क्रियाको अन्तिम ध्वनि मा निर्भर गर्दछ।

नियम १ — /ɪd/: /t/ वा /d/ पछि

When the verb already ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound, you need an extra syllable, otherwise you could not hear the ending:

जब क्रिया पहिले नै /t/ वा /d/ ध्वनि संग समाप्त हुन्छ, तब तपाईंलाई अतिरिक्त अक्षर चाहिन्छ, नत्र अन्त्य सुन्न सकिँदैन:

  • want → wanted /ɪd/
  • need → needed /ɪd/
  • decide → decided /ɪd/

This is the only case where -ed is a separate syllable.

यो -ed अलग अक्षर हुने एकमात्र केस हो।

नियम २ — /t/: अव्यंजन ध्वनि पछि

After a voiceless sound (/p/, /k/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /f/, /θ/) the ending is a short, quiet /t:

अव्यंजन ध्वनि (/p/, /k/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /f/, /θ/) पछि अन्त्य छोटो, शान्त /t हुन्छ:

  • work → worked /wɜːkt/
  • stop → stopped /stɒpt/
  • watch → watched /wɒtʃt/
  • laugh → laughed /lɑːft/

नियम ३ — /d/: बाँकी सबै ध्वनि पछि

After vowels and voiced sounds the ending is a soft /d:

स्वरध्वनि र ध्वन्यात्मक ध्वनि (voiced) पछि अन्त्य नरम /d हुन्छ:

  • play → played /pleɪd/
  • live → lived /lɪvd/
  • call → called /kɔːld/

Quick check: put your hand on your throat and say the last sound of the verb. Buzz → /d/. No buzz → /t/. A /t/ or /d/ already there → /ɪd/.

छिटो जाँच: घाँटीमा हात राखेर क्रियाको अन्तिम ध्वनि बोल्नुहोस्। Buzz → /d/. Buzz नहुँदा → /t/. /t/ वा /d/ पहिले नै छ भने → /ɪd/.

सानो कथा संग अभ्यास

I walked home, opened the door, and wanted to sleep. Then I remembered I needed to cook. I washed some rice and called my friend.

Count the syllables as you read. Walked and washed are one syllable each; only wanted and needed grow.

पढ्दै जाँदा अक्षरहरू गन्ती गर्नुहोस्। Walked र washed प्रत्येक एक अक्षर छन्; केवल wanted र needed दोहोरो हुन्छ।
