Jak vyslovovat koncovky -ed: /t/, /d/ nebo /ɪd/

"Worked" má jednu slabiku, "wanted" má dvě. Tři jednoduchá pravidla pro koncovky minulého času, která většina studentů špatně používá.

Learners often pronounce every -ed ending as a full extra syllable: “work-ed”, “play-ed”, “jump-ed”. Native speakers almost never do. In fact, most -ed endings add no syllable at all.

Studenti často vyslovují každou -ed koncovku jako plnou další slabiku: “work-ed”, “play-ed”, “jump-ed”. Rodilí mluvčí to téměř nikdy nedělají. Ve skutečnosti většina -ed koncovek nepřidává žádnou slabiku.

There are three ways to say -ed, and the rule depends only on the last sound of the verb.

Existují tři způsoby, jak vyslovit -ed, a pravidlo závisí jen na posledním zvuku slovesa.

Pravidlo 1 — /ɪd/: po /t/ nebo /d/

When the verb already ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound, you need an extra syllable, otherwise you could not hear the ending:

Když sloveso už končí na zvuk /t/ nebo /d/, potřebujete další slabiku, jinak byste koncovku neslyšeli:

  • want → wanted /ɪd/
  • need → needed /ɪd/
  • decide → decided /ɪd/

This is the only case where -ed is a separate syllable.

Toto je jediný případ, kdy je -ed samostatná slabika.

Pravidlo 2 — /t/: po neznělých zvucích

After a voiceless sound (/p/, /k/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /f/, /θ/) the ending is a short, quiet /t:

Po neznělém zvuku (/p/, /k/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /f/, /θ/) je koncovka krátké, tiché /t:

  • work → worked /wɜːkt/
  • stop → stopped /stɒpt/
  • watch → watched /wɒtʃt/
  • laugh → laughed /lɑːft/

Pravidlo 3 — /d/: po všem ostatním

After vowels and voiced sounds the ending is a soft /d:

Po samohláskách a znělých souhláskách je koncovka měkké /d:

  • play → played /pleɪd/
  • live → lived /lɪvd/
  • call → called /kɔːld/

Quick check: put your hand on your throat and say the last sound of the verb. Buzz → /d/. No buzz → /t/. A /t/ or /d/ already there → /ɪd/.

Rychlá kontrola: položte ruku na krk a řekněte poslední zvuk slovesa. Bzučení → /d/. Žádné bzučení → /t/. Už je tam /t/ nebo /d/ → /ɪd/.

Procvičte si s krátkým příběhem

I walked home, opened the door, and wanted to sleep. Then I remembered I needed to cook. I washed some rice and called my friend.

Count the syllables as you read. Walked and washed are one syllable each; only wanted and needed grow.

Počítejte slabiky, když čtete. Walked a washed mají každá jednu slabiku; jen wanted a needed se prodlouží.

HolosAccent scores the final consonants of every word, so a dropped or extra -ed is visible right away — a small detail that makes your English sound much more confident.

HolosAccent hodnotí koncové souhlásky každého slova, takže vynechaná nebo přidaná -ed je okamžitě vidět — malý detail, který vaše angličtině dodá mnohem větší sebevědomí.
